Are you an experienced leader with a proven background in regulatory functions or planning, and a dedication to environmental rehabilitation? Ready for a new challenge where you can make a big impact?

As Chief Regulatory Officer with the Resources Regulator (part of NSW Resources) you’ll lead a team of specialists to promote and enforce technical rehabilitation standards, playing a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with the Mining Act and related regulations at mining and exploration sites in New South Wales.

This is a big job that comes with complex and politically sensitive challenges. Your days will be busy with key responsibilities that include:
  1. Strategic Leadership: Provide strategic direction and leadership to the Mining Act Inspectorate and the broader mining industry on technical rehabilitation standards in the administration and application of the Mining Act legislation.
  2. Stakeholder Engagement & Partnerships: Build strategic partnerships with the mining industry and other regulators. Create and manage targeted campaigns, workshops, working groups or committees, industry forums, and community meetings
  3. Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement: Oversee complex incident investigations and complaints, provide guidance on compliance and regulatory issues and contribute to the development of industry standards and guidelines.
To be successful you’ll need:
  • A current Class C drivers licence
  • Relevant tertiary qualification and leadership experience in a regulatory environment.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, provide guidance and strategic direction, and foster a collaborative and supportive team environment.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated experience building strategic partnerships including stakeholder engagement, negotiation, and issue resolution
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability working at a senior level within a complex and politically sensitive environment
A current understanding of NSW mining legislation and environmental compliance requirements may be an advantage but is not essential.

Things to know about the role:
  • Preferred location is Maitland, however all other Department office locations (Sydney and regional NSW) may be considered
  • Compliance with pre-employment probity screening is mandatory and a condition of engagement.
  • Appointment will be subject to the satisfactory participation in a pre-employment health assessment.
